Meet Stacey & Brandon's Coach, Chris Bethke

Meet Chris.  Financial Coach.  World traveler.  Badger Football Fan.

Chris-Bethkex4About Chris:  “
I have been happily married to my husband, Jim, for almost 18 years. We are lucky to have strong friendships and family in our lives and most weekends are filled spending time with them.

During football season, you’ll find us at the Badger games. We love to host elaborate tailgate parties and enjoy the game with our friends.”

Her childhood: “I grew up in the country on a farm, which teaches you a very strong work ethic.  It was a wonderful way to grow up.

In her spare time:  “I love to travel. My friends would say I have a slight obsession with New York! My favorite vacation was a trip that my husband and I took to Egypt.  We did all the tourist-y things, including the Pyramids, Valley of the Kings, The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities and seeing King Tut’s treasure.  The first question I normally get from people is if we rode a camel.  Nope!”

Dream vacation: The Maldives.

Favorite movie:  “I am a child of the 80’s.  I love Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink and Back to the Future.”

Favorite childhood TV show:  Happy Days. “Who didn’t love the Fonz?”

First paying job:  “I was offered a babysitting job during my early teens and I only made it a week.  I decided that I liked my farming duties (with no pay) much better than watching two preschoolers.”

Best financial tip: Track your spending.  “It may not be the easiest, and people groan when I recommend it, but it works!   You might be shocked at how much is spent on groceries or dining out.”

On helping others become financially successful: “When my husband and I were first married, we took on more debt than we should have.  We financed the wedding and our honeymoon, and bought a home before we were ready.  It was ‘keeping up with the Jones’.’  It didn’t help that at that time, my career was in jewelry sales, which meant I spent more than we saved.

I started to work in banking and the light bulb went off in my head.  We couldn’t keep going down this same path.  My husband and I got on the same page and turned our finances around and started saving and paying off debt.  If we can do this anyone can!”

What interesting item she keeps in her wallet:  “Seriously, what don’t I keep in my wallet!  My brother-in-law asked me if I had cashed his check from February. I swear I had, but I didn’t find it in my wallet until May.”

Quirkiest habit:  “I will not eat meat off the bone. Chicken, pork, steak, it doesn’t matter.  At a friend’s wedding, for example, we were served chicken-on-the-bone.  A friend saw my reaction and proceeded to debone my chicken for me!”

What she’d do with $10K:  “I am very practical money-wise. It would take me weeks to analyze the best way for us to spend/save it.  I know some of it would go to savings and the rest for improvements on our home.  Although a new handbag would also be nice, or maybe another trip to NYC!”
