Brian’s Tire Budgeteering (AKA The ‘Two Terrible Tires’ Blues)

Rachel normally does the blogs for us but has a bit of writers block. Although not nearly as entertaining, I (Brian) am going to discuss our recent tire purchase. Exciting? No. A purchase most people need to make? Yes.

My goal was to replace the 2 worst tires with 2 used ones. I really struggled with that since a 4-wheel drive should have all 4 tires replaced at the same time. I researched all the businesses that carried tires in Portage and contacted them describing my needs. My inquiries led nowhere. In fact, one response I received was, “You’re the 6th guy this week asking for that.” Considering that it was only Wednesday I realized that the economy has forced a lot of households to save wherever possible.

With Old Man Winter nearing and my lack of success finding used tires; I bit the bullet and investigated 2 new tires. Weber tires in Bristol always had the low price (and usually the longest wait this time of year). They were in fact the lowest but by only $3 a tire when compared to Portage Tire. Considering the fuel and time expense I went with our local business. I had 2 new tires in 25 minutes and was back home in 5.

We are saving for 2 more tires in January. Should only be about 1,000 miles difference which will be negated with proper rotation. Budgeting takes a little time, creativity, and a willingness to deviate from the standard but certainly pays dividends in the end.

P.S. from Rachel: No writers block here, just wanted Brian to blog about one of his budgeteering projects. Way to take on the tires, baby!
