The Big Picture

This past week I went to two orchestra concerts. One was my son's 7th grade viola concert and the other one was my daughter's UW Milwaukee community orchestra concert. Yes, they were very different in sound and skill level. But each orchestra member had the same passion for their instrument and the sound that came out of it.

Every time we clapped there were lots of smiles from all of their faces.

The unsung hero's are the music teachers. They both have big hearts for their students. And a lot of talent. It just amazes me how they can start with a student who doesn't even know how to hold their violin or bow and they can turn them into someone that can bring their viola and violin to their grandma's care center and make tears come to her eyes when she hears them play. It makes me cry just writing this. Unbelievable!

Well, I also feel amazed at how Summit Credit Union employees have the same passion for their members as the music teachers have for their students. They want you to get out of debt and they want you to have a plan for saving as much money as you can. They want your dreams to come true. And they help you make them happen.

If you go on to their website http://projectmoney.summitcreditunion.com/ you will see the progress that we have made in five months of being on their program. We have saved, as a group, $17,711 and we have reduced our debt, as a group to the tune of $22,648.

Over $4,0000 plus finally going in the right direction. All in 5 short months. Not on just stuff anymore. Credit cards paid off or reduced, cars paid off, student loans paid down, just to name a few.

In the beginning of Project Money I brought my pile of bills and regrets to Mary Johnson, my financial guru. We walked hand in hand to get through it. Together we made a plan and a budget. Mary tweaking it a bit to encourage more savings. I gave myself too much on the food budget. I had to cut down on going out to eat. Remember, down, not totally cut it out.

Now after having 6 meetings with Mary, I feel like we are jogging to the finish line and we are smiling and not out of breath.

Looking back to some of my defining moments before Summit started helping me was putting my groceries on my credit card. What was I thinking? I barely had enough money to pay the minimum payment. Looking at my finances in the beginning of this journey, I only had my pension to show for all of my 35 plus years of working really hard. AND a lot of stuff.

Now I can look at my two savings accounts and see them plum full of money and growing each paycheck. I didn't know in the beginning how excited I would be doing all of this. It's been a lot of hard work and a lot of times saying no to myself and Dylan. But every day it's been worth it. The big picture is becoming clearer and I'm focusing on the finish line.

One day I will be packing up just a 'little' stuff and moving into my new house that I saved up for with Summit Credit Union's help, Mary Johnson's help and me making the right choices for Dylan, myself and my money!
