Unplugged
When we moved to Madison there was a long discussion about whether or not we should still have cable TV. We weighed out the pros and cons, and in the end decided to try not paying for cable TV. We haven't looked back since! There's a lot of ways you can use the internet to get your TV on your schedule. If you're thinking about giving up your satellite or cable TV, I would urge you to try it and I'll share some pointers on how we're making it work.
1. Get high speed internet (We actually use Charter for this, but DSL would work also.)
2. Netflix, we stream shows to our PS3 and Wii (They have a nice selection of past seasons of TV shows, movies that have been on video for a while and a nice selection of documentaries that are hard to find.)
3. Hulu.com (This is a great website that has a wide selection of current TV seasons, you should check to see if your shows are available for streaming through this website. A lot of TVs now have an input for your laptop so you can watch them in your living room!)
4. iTunes and Amazon On Demand (We use these as kind of a last resort, but you can rent/buy episodes the same day they air a lot of times.)
That's our strategy and it's working great! We save about $60 a month by not having cable TV!!
