Finding Time for the Hustle

Like all the other Project Money participants we are looking for ways to increase our income. Of course we are reducing our spending, cutting debt and cutting coupons (I STILL hate coupons!) There have been some ups and downs lately. We had been seeing improvement and then Wham-o, we realized we over drew our account due to a mis-timing of paying a bill. Even though we went electric, we still need to be careful of when we move our monies. We were so excited to move $400 over into savings that we did it too early and brought our balance too low and a bill went out a day early. Dan took it very hard. He lost sleep over it because he thought that we would never be in this situation again. We tried to look at the positive and see that this was a bump in the road not a complete detour. We are STILL doing better than ever before, we are STILL communicating better but we STILL have room to improve.

To increase our income Dan has done a side job for landscaping and that helped bring in some income. I’ve been doing massage as a barter (helps with keeping costs down) and have recently taken over the Sales Coordinator position for Monkey Business Institute.

Monkey Business Institute (M.B.I.) is an improv group in Madison that I do comedy with. It is a BLAST! We do shows every Saturday at 6pm and 8pm. We also do private parties, holiday events, New Year’s Eve celebrations along with corporate training and improv classes. I have been in love with Improv since I first saw it at the age of 14. I’ve been performing since 1993 – first with ComedySportz Madison and now with M.B.I. It is a natural fit to take over the Sales Coordinator position – I love improv and I love to talk with people about how to bring improv comedy to their parties. It still takes time. Extra time that is very hard to come by. Fortunately I can check e-mail and voice mail before and after work. As of now I’m just fielding calls and requests as they come in. I create proposals, book parties, playshops and events, coordinate with our owners and follow up with the contacts to make sure they were happy and loved the shows. What I really need to be doing is getting out there and hustle up some business! I just contacted a group that hosts a huge New Year’s Eve bash to see if I can write a proposal to work with them as entertainment for the night – to find out that they are DONE with their bookings and everything is going to print. Already! Here I thought I was ahead of the ball game and getting in there with plenty of time to work something out. It’s improv, right?! We make it up as we go!!  I guess I’ll know better for next year. The next step is to coordinate with Dan to find time for the hustle. I need to create a few hours each week to set aside some time to work on creating new gigs for the crew, think ahead and help people bring the funny while I make a little money.

The Monkey Business Institute features the best improvised comedy in the region. With no sets, props, scripts or line memorization to fall back on we creates spur-of-the-moment, seat-of-the-pants improvisational comedy. We mix audience suggestions, decades of improv experience, and sheer moxie to create one of a kind live comedy shows. Specializing in traditional and musical improv comedy, we are available for hire for corporate events, private parties, and social gatherings. Sounds like fun, right?
