A Letter to Project Money

Dear Project Money,

I hate to break it to you, but the first date charm has worn off.

You are still cute, and all, but we are now officially in the heart of this relationship and I gotta say, it’s not all pretty. You were so attractive, at first, maybe even a little sexy – but DANG, you are a little pushy! Aren’t we rushing things a little bit? I mean, really – don’t we want to take a little time before we just jump right into a commitment? Maybe in 2 months, once we see how things are going we can commit to a budget plan. Let’s just take things a little slower – let’s just stay in our comfort zone a little longer. We can keep seeing others – I know you’ve been courting savings for a while now and we’ve been taking debt out for years – no need to break that up, just yet, right?

I mean, really, what good can come from getting on track RIGHT now?! It’s summer for gosh sakes! Let’s play around, let’s fly by the seat of our pants, let’s see where the road takes us, let’s be easy breezy. No need to jump in with both feet and really immerse ourselves into this shocking new reality.

What? That’s not acceptable? We are either in or out?! 

You want us to face the fact that we are running in the red every month and we would have never known that if it weren’t for you? You want us to actually be completely honest with ourselves? You want us to admit that you are the best thing that has ever happened to us since sliced bread? You want us to face facts, look at the big picture and make a commitment for the future? Sheesh. You are asking a lot.

I know we are really good for each other and we’ve gotten off to a really great start. We can see how you can be really helpful, fun, smart and you only want the best for us. So, we’ll give it a shot. Play the game your way. We are going to go through our budget and make changes. We are going to make phone calls to HBO that will be very uncomfortable, we are going to cancel our other lunch dates, we will be creative to find new ways to look at the world. We are really going to try to make this work between us.

You know, you scare us a little bit. Maybe that’s why we like you so much. We’ve never been in a relationship like this before. You shake things up, you make us try new things and you are really supportive. When we first heard about you through one of those ads, we checked you out on face book and asked around about you. All our friends said that we would be a perfect match for you. Everyone who has told us about you said that you are amazing. You know what Project Money? They are right. We’ll do our best to make this a relationship a LTR.
